About Julie

I’m a Ph.D. scientist who loves talking about + teaching others to talk about science.

I previously worked at the American Society for Microbiology and taught at the community biolab, Genspace. Now I work for the biotech accelerator IndieBio NY.

I have:

  • Moderated discussions on GMOs, gene drives, and similar issues among the general public.
  • Written dozens of non-technical articles for the scientific and nonscientific communities.
  • Taught microbiology 101 to the staff of large nonprofit societies.
  • Interviewed the head of China CDC, the Director of Infectious Diseases Research at the Mayo Clinic, and the NIH scientist who developed the HPV vaccine.
  • Summarized dense scientific literature into a tweet, a facebook post, a blog, and a 5 minute YouTube video.
  • Helped scientists eliminate jargon from their conversations.
  • Moderated panels of science communicators to share learnings and best practices.
  • Used Google Analytics and best web-writing practices to increase organic web traffic.
  • Worked with early-career through expert-level scientists to improve scientific messaging.
  • Solicited and edited commentaries on cutting-edge research.
  • Grown social media accounts by 200-400% over a 5-year period.
  • Hosted author interviews at the New York Public Library.
  • Instructed broad audiences of non-scientists how to apply the basics of DNA technologies.

Spoken to dozens of early-career scientists wondering how I took this path. If you’re one of them, please get in touch! I’m happy to share my thought processes, experiences, and failures.
